By Alfred McCoy
In the wake of 9/11, the US government authorized the use of torture in an effort to prevent future terrorist attacks. This dark chapter in American history is exposed in Alfred McCoy's gripping book, Truth, Torture, and the American Way.
McCoy, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, draws on declassified documents and firsthand accounts to provide a comprehensive account of the US government's use of torture. He shows how torture was used not only against suspected terrorists, but also against innocent civilians.
The book also explores the devastating consequences of torture, both for the victims and the perpetrators. McCoy argues that torture is not only morally repugnant, but also ineffective. It does not produce reliable intelligence and it can lead to false confessions.
Truth, Torture, and the American Way is a powerful indictment of the US government's use of torture. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the true cost of war.
