Synopsis
Shanghai Dreams: The Earl's Other Son is a sweeping historical novel that transports readers to the vibrant and tumultuous city of Shanghai in the early 20th century. At the heart of the story are two young men from vastly different worlds: Robert, the illegitimate son of an English earl, and Ah-Ling, a poor Chinese street urchin.

Their paths cross when Robert is sent to Shanghai to work for his father's trading company. Ah-Ling becomes his guide and interpreter, and as they spend time together, they develop a deep bond that transcends their differences.
But their friendship is tested by the growing tensions between the British and Chinese communities in Shanghai. Robert is torn between his loyalty to his country and his growing love for Ah-Ling. Ah-Ling, in turn, must choose between his desire for a better life and his duty to his people.
As the political situation in Shanghai deteriorates, Robert and Ah-Ling find themselves caught in a web of intrigue and danger. They must fight for their love and their lives, and in the process, they discover the true meaning of family and belonging.
Author's Note
I was inspired to write Shanghai Dreams: The Earl's Other Son after reading about the many British merchants who lived and worked in Shanghai in the early 20th century. I was particularly intrigued by the stories of the so-called "Shanghai babies" - the illegitimate children of British fathers and Chinese mothers.
These children were often ostracized by both the British and Chinese communities, and they faced a unique set of challenges in life. I wanted to explore their experiences and to give voice to their stories.
Shanghai Dreams: The Earl's Other Son is a work of historical fiction, but it is also based on extensive research. I traveled to Shanghai and spent time talking to people who had lived through the period that I am writing about. I also read numerous books and articles about Shanghai's history.
I hope that this novel will help readers to understand the complex and fascinating history of Shanghai, and to appreciate the resilience of the human spirit.
