Bror Erickson was just 19 years old when he was drafted into the United States Army and sent to fight in the Vietnam War. He served as a combat medic, and his job was to save the lives of his fellow soldiers. He saw things that no human being should ever have to see, and he experienced the horrors of war firsthand.
After the war, Erickson returned home a changed man. He was haunted by the memories of what he had seen and done, and he struggled to adjust to civilian life. He eventually wrote a book about his experiences in Vietnam, titled With My Own Eyes. The book is a powerful and moving account of the war, its horrors, and its aftermath.
With My Own Eyes is not an easy book to read. It is graphic and unflinching in its depiction of the war. But it is also a necessary book. It is a reminder of the horrors of war, and it is a tribute to the brave men and women who have served our country.
Here is an excerpt from the book:
I remember one day when we were on patrol, and we came under fire from the enemy. We were pinned down, and I was trying to help a wounded soldier. He had been shot in the stomach, and his intestines were hanging out. I tried to stop the bleeding, but it was no use. He died in my arms.
I'll never forget the look in his eyes as he died. It was a look of terror and pain, but it was also a look of resignation. He knew that he was going to die, and he was at peace with it.
I've seen a lot of death in my life, but that was the hardest one to take. He was just a kid, and he didn't deserve to die.
With My Own Eyes is a powerful and moving account of the Vietnam War. It is a book that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
