Early Life

Sigmund Freud was born on May 6, 1856, in Freiberg, Moravia (now Pribor, Czech Republic). He was the first of eight children born to Jacob Freud, a wool merchant, and Amalia Nathanson Freud.

Freud's early life was marked by both privilege and adversity. His family was well-to-do, and Freud received a privileged education. However, he also experienced anti-Semitism from a young age. This experience would later shape his views on the human psyche.

Medical School and Early Career

Freud entered the University of Vienna in 1873 to study medicine. He was a brilliant student and quickly excelled in his studies. In 1881, he graduated from medical school with honors.

After graduating from medical school, Freud worked as a neurologist at the Vienna General Hospital. He conducted groundbreaking research on the anatomy of the brain and the nervous system. However, he eventually became disillusioned with the limitations of neurology.

The Birth of Psychoanalysis
