Early Life

Ian Fleming was born on May 28, 1908, in London, England. His father was Valentine Fleming, a Member of Parliament, and his mother was Evelyn St. Croix Fleming, a daughter of the Earl of Wemyss. Fleming had two older brothers, Peter and Richard.

Fleming's childhood was privileged. He attended Eton College, one of the most prestigious boarding schools in England. After graduating from Eton, Fleming worked briefly as a journalist before joining the Royal Navy in 1929.

Military Service

Fleming served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. He was initially assigned to the destroyer HMS Codrington, but was later transferred to the Naval Intelligence Division. In this role, Fleming was responsible for developing plans for deception and sabotage.

Fleming's experiences in the war had a profound impact on his writing. He later said that "the war taught me how to write." His novels are full of realistic details about espionage and warfare.

Writing Career

After the war, Fleming left the Royal Navy and began writing full-time. His first novel, Casino Royale, was published in 1953. The novel was an instant success, and Fleming went on to write twelve more James Bond novels.

Personal Life
