The authors, Chris Stauffer and Scott Sagan, are both former nuclear missile launch officers who have spent years studying the cybersecurity risks to nuclear weapons. In 'Hacking the Bomb,' they argue that the US nuclear weapons system is woefully unprepared for a cyber attack. They point to a number of specific vulnerabilities, including:
- The use of outdated software and hardware
- The lack of a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy
- The reliance on human operators who are not trained to deal with cyber threats
Stauffer and Sagan argue that these vulnerabilities could allow a hacker to gain control of a nuclear weapon and launch it without authorization. They also warn that a cyber attack could trigger a nuclear war by accident.
'Hacking the Bomb' is a timely and important book. It raises serious questions about the security of our nuclear weapons system and the future of nuclear weapons. It is a must-read for anyone who is concerned about the dangers of nuclear war.
